Infusion (IVFD) Installation Procedure

Infusion (IVFD) Installation Procedure

IVFD is no stranger to our ears. As a nurse, of course, you have to be adept at installing infusion, because almost every patient who is treated in a hospital is sure to use an infusion and who is installing it is certainly a nurse

infusion   is a lifesaving action such as a lot of fluid loss, dehydration and shock, therefore the success of therapy and safe delivery method requires basic knowledge of fluid balance.

Definition of Infusion Installation

Giving intravenous fluids (infusions) is an action taken to insert fluid or drugs directly through a vein in a certain amount and time by using an infusion set.

The purpose of infusion installation
  • Restores and maintains body fluid and electrolyte balance
  • Inserting drugs into the patient's body through a bolus / intravenously
  • Blood transfusion
  • Provide fluid nutrition and nutritional supplements
Preparation of Infusion Installation

1. Patient preparation

Provide an explanation to patients about infusion, installation procedures and the purpose of infusion itself.

2. Preparation of equipment for infusion
  • Infusion fluid
  • infusion set as needed
  • vein needle according to the size needed
  • tourniquet
  • carpe
  • Plesster
  • scissor
  • Crooked
  • Sterile gloves
  • Sterile gauze
  • The alcoholic cotton in antiseptic place is in its place

How to install an Infusion
  • washing hands
  • Prepare the infusion pole
  • Open the plastic infusion set correctly
  • Keep protecting the tip of the sterile hose
  • hang the infusion set with intravenous fluid with the position of the intravenous fluid pointing upwards
  • Hang intravenous fluids at the infusion column
  • Insert the hose into the infusion fluid
  • fill the infusion set with intravenous fluid by pressing the drip space (but don't get it submerged)
  • fill the entire IV tube by opening the valve that is placed next to the infusion and make sure there is no air in the IV tube
  • Use sterile gloves
  • choose the right vein to install the IV
  • place carpet and slacker under the body part to be infused
  • Install the tourniquet
  • Perform disinfection in the vein area that will be done by infusion with alcohol from top to bottom with a single erase
  • Open vein needle, check if there is damage or not
  • vein needle puncture of selected venous vessels
  • note the presence of blood in the blood tube contained in the vein needle
  • Remove the tourniquet while pressing the blood vessels that have been pierced using vein needle so that the blood does not spur
  • Connect the end of the infusion hose to the vein needle which has been first removed slightly
  • Attach the tape to the end of the vein needle but do not touch the stabbing area for fixation
  • wrap with gauze given antiseptic and cover with a dry sterile gauze on top of it
  • give the tape properly and maintain the safety of vein needle so that it is not removed
  • set drip infusion according to the patient's needs
  • Trim the appliance
  • washing hands

Evaluation of infusion installation
  • Pay attention to the infusion as desired or not
  • Note that there is no freezing in the area of stabbing if there is swelling, remove the infusion and reattach it elsewhere.
  • also pay attention to the patient's response to the giving of action.

Infusion Installation Documentation

record the actions that have been taken (execution time, results of actions, reactions   client response to infusion, fluid and droplets given, number of vein needle, vein installed, and nurse performing) in the nurse's documentation record (note in nursing planning)

Thank you for reading the article about "infusion according to procedures" hopefully useful for colleagues.
